San Francisco Churches: St. Francis of Assisi, Old St. Mary's Cathedral, Sts. Peter and Paul

The National Shrine to St. Francis of Assisi is located in San Francisco, the city that also bears the saint's name. The church is older than the city and the state of California, having been established in 1849. The gothic white marble high altar resembles that of St. Mark's in Peoria, IL, my home parish.

Even as the interior was destroyed by the fire, these outside wall withstood the 1906 earthquake.

A beautiful portrait of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

Above is the only photo I took in Old St. Mary's Cathedral in Chinatown

I spent the most time at Sts. Peter and Paul, attending Mass three times. The last time, I was asked to carry up one of the Advent candles during the procession.

Gorgeous reproduction of Michelangelo's Pieta.
